I have always thought that the loveliest part of a wedding was the house in the days leading up to it.

The doors were never quite shut, someone was always arriving, and every room seemed to have a purpose. There were trays of mithai on the dining table, freshly ironed clothes laid out on beds, and the sound of women talking over one another as they prepared for the celebrations.

I remember how certain women seemed to hold all that beautiful chaos together. They knew where everything was, remembered what everyone needed, and somehow still found the time to sit beside you and ask if you had eaten.

Gulbadan was inspired by women like them.

The richness of its gold, the deep green of its emeralds, and the delicate pearls remind me of those grand family celebrations. 

Because when we look back at the happiest days of our lives, we rarely remember whether everything went perfectly.

We remember the people who made us feel loved.
