When I was little, there was an old embroidered shawl in our house that I was particularly fond of.

It had the most beautiful little birds worked into its borders, surrounded by flowers and curling vines. I remember sitting with it spread across my lap, tracing the patterns with my fingers and making up stories about where the birds might have come from, and where they were going.

I always liked the ones that appeared in pairs. In my mind, they belonged together, and wherever one went, the other would surely follow.

Gul-o-Bulbul was inspired by that little world of embroidered gardens and imagined stories.

The two birds facing one another, the delicate polki blossom between them, and the gentle movement of the jhumkas remind me of those old patterns — the kind that someone had once taken such care to create, simply because they wanted to make something beautiful.

I think that's what I love most about traditional craftsmanship.

Even the smallest details were given a story of their own.

Materials: Silver alloy base, 22-karat gold plating, polki stones, Bangladeshi pearls, and turquoise-coloured crystal beads.
